acceptable fungus,

its wrong to take the drop of someone who is doing their part, it is NOT wrong to take the drop of someone who is not doing their part, and instead is just standing there sucking up drops/coins

Was doing a four man farm for Kepwhatevers Refuge, that new green staff. We lost our warrior after a couple runs, and went to town and got a new one. The staff dropped for him the very next run...he never picked it up. We went and killed Featherfist & ScreamingClaw...never picked it up.

Everyone zoned for the next run, so I grabbed it.

And gave it back to him. Don't be pricks guys, sure, some ppl are dense, but don't punish them for it

It depends. If they don't pick it up, and are moving on, you should ask...they may have forgotten. If they don't pick it up because they are dead/busy fighting, DON"T ever steal from them. I got my Vokur's Chakram because the person that it was assigned to didn't pick it up, and when I asked if he wanted it he said it wasn't worth anything, then I asked if I could have it...so now I have a new chakram for my mesmer.

If they are a total jerk yelling at eveyone, aggroing too much, not following orders/called targets, and going afk then IMO you have every right to pick it up.

I had a party for DDF where our trapper went afk for most of the quest. Near the end came back on and started picking up drops that had expired (mostly stone summit badges). Fortunately we did not finish the quest (yeah, I would rather redo it than let him afk finish the quest), but if something good would have dropped for him I would have taken it or given it to someone else in the group...

EDIT:

as far as the poll goes, it should have a different option of "it depends"

If it's a freeloader, that mission/quest won't last too long anyways. I'd rather split my gold and drops with the henchies than a freeloader.

If we all pull our weight, that drop belongs to him/her until he/she says "take it". Then it's a free for all.

I'd take any unassigned item anyday. We all have a slight sense of greed inside.

I answered the poll incorrectly

I would NOT take someones rare stuff - and as others say I would announce it to them.

However, I ticked yes because I *do* pick up the junk white stuff that people leave around - in fact I make a game of it on group activities and scramble around scavenging for salvage stuff that people dont pick up.
But I announce that too - that I am scavenging - so if anyone else liked picking up the junk stuff they get to as well.

Easier said then done. Mostly, I think people will say they will give it back. Generally people do give it back if it's crap, like a gold Chakram or gold Earth Rod. But when an Unided Crystalline or Dwarven Axe drops, what would you really do? It feels nice to say you would, but I know most people would take it, me included.

Sometimes I have taken an item from another player on a chest run. The guy runs to chest, it drops a Req. 11 gold Earth Wand. Most probably crap and a merch for a mere 200g, but NOOO! He yells and flames and curses for someone to rez him so he can get it. We take our time moving around the mob in the Burning Forest. By the time someone has found a place to use Rebirth, it is unassigned. Because that guy is being such a jack@$$, I take it myself and merch it. Some people just deserve not to get it.

Wow, I guess I'm a jerk. Not only have a failed to mention to another player that they got a gold drop, I've actually left my group behind to camp on top of a gold drop.

I wouldn't take it unless they honestly don't want it(several exceptions below). If it's somthing remotely good, or anything gold and they run right past, I'll tell them about it. If they still don't take it I'll ask if I can have it.

If it's crap I usualy don't want it either, only time I've ever ran back to get junk would be in SF FoW or UW after everyone has quit and only then when I don't have an inventory full of stuff.

If someone is being a total retard, or as in 1 mission yesterday runs back to the start of the mission to ressurect their level 6 dead pet that was killed in 1 hit by the first monster.. Maybe I'll leech it. But running for 15 min because they're "lost" and on their way ect..

Or if the person is leeching/greifing/refusing to do anything that might benefit the party in some meaningful way(no, /goteam and /cheer does NOT count as helping.)

Valuable drops? Sure, I'll ask the person first. Unless they're acting like a total jackass.

I just /ragequit and /tiredquit a failed Forgemaster run (somebody I know needs the armor) with a PUG. One of the warriors did nothing but steal drops. (I stole one of his better drops in revenge for being a freeloader.) When we got to the Temple of War, things got ugly between him (or was he an "it"?) and the others, and it tried to draw massive aggro (while the other warrior's holding the book, dur). It died and quit.

During the entire attempt, from start til end, everyone (including the person I was trying to help) was intent on looting unassigned drops, though.

Guild Wars Helpful Hint #231: Don't loot drops, especially if you're not contributing. I like Vilaptca's stance on the matter.

I pick up everything I see when I get the chance, but, if they ask for it, I usually just give it back. Most of the time it goes like this:

I pick something up.
Him: Hey, that was mine!
Me: Hmmm, so, you want it back?
Him: Nah, keep it anyway.

Unless its like ecto/shard/dye/green/gold, they usually want those back, and I usually just give them back.

Bah! I only travel with strangers, and my Guild is highly inactive and new. I have never heard any of the strangers bother about whos drop is where, and if they still want it.
As healer by nature I see what drops and who takes it. Unasigned drops are always picked up by everybody and nobody cares. I don't even bother to tell people to start fighting and stop picking up stuff. As monk I simply heal and that is all. Sometimes I stop healing leechers, but that is very rare.
If there are people who actually communicate, I haven't found them yet.

I always try to tell people about their gold drops or if they get a dc or they cant be rezzed etc etc, I keep it for them and give them back in town.

One time tough I had this party wich was...well full of "noobs", Ranger running around with mantra of fire and storm chaser, warrior didint know what to do, ele was a water ele , 2 monks that didint seem to know what the hell they were doing. the only nice guy was the SS nec, I was running BiP.

The group got wiped out several times (except for me and the ss), they were accusing me and him for being chickens etc etc. >_>
And then they started saying i was useless and shit.

Well i sat down and did nothing.(first quest done)
They got to the Skeles and everyone died trying to open a chest.
There were 5 gold items lying there.(req 8 chaos axe and req 8 shdow bow amongst others)

Now they started saying I was needed and that I should rez them...
Bah i tought, waited till they went Free for all. Charged in with Illusion of haste. picked them all up, rezzed the necro and gave him a key so he could open it. then me and him ran to another chest and got some neat drops from that too. ^^

If you've been acting like a jerk, yeah, I'll take your drop.
In the case of a good player, I'll probably still take the drop, so I can give it back to you, because I can't trust anyone else to do the same.

There are two extremes here and not a lot in the middle in my experience.

If somebody had the time to pick up a low value white drop and didn't, I figure they didn't want it.

If we're in a big fight and people don't have time to pick up their drops, your drop is yours even if it times out.

I was with a not terribly skillful SF group and one of the fights in Grenth's Footprint became ridiculously hard. I got a gold drop but it had timed out by the time the fight was over. Another guy picked it up. I said it had been mine. He disagreed. I suggested he scroll up to check. Before long, he turned it over.

Had he not, I would have left the group immediately.

tell you the truth it depends on who I'm with, I feel no loyalty to random pugs, unless they've been nice/talkative but with friends i definately wouldn't steal a drop, even if I did pick it up

If he/she is too stupid to pick it up... Why not? If they're dead, well, that's different. Res them first.

Far too often, I see this in missions where groups crumble and its left to Birth pulls to reorganize. A valuable item drops for a player, and they are too busy (or dead) to take possession of it.

Intire issue=PUG mentality. Pick Up Groups rarely are capable of attaining the comraderee fo Guild/Friend groups. This is a further degeneration into the Free-for-All mentality that makes me dislike PUGs in the first place:
"So what if my constant rushing makes the mission harder for the monk/nuke/whoever is complaing? I haven't died...yet."
"So what if everyone wants me to bring skill X? Once we're inside, they'll see how leet my build is and know they're with a MASTA! And if they're depending on that skill? Then THEY should have brought it, not depended on ME!"
"So what if its someone else's drop? I'm Poor and all monks/mesmers/eles are 55 farmers! They don't need a few measly plat!"

If you're not in a guild and you act that way, don't expect to get into a GOOD one any time soon (if you are, expect someone to remember your name and report you to a Guild leader one of these days for stealing; Tyria is a smaller world than many of you realise. I've met your guildies and remembered your names. i've asked who your guild leader was and added them to my friends list, whispering them in game. Then i've sent them screenshots via email of the crap you pulled while the group flamed you in impotence and explained how bad a name it gives your guild[a ver Bad Thing with Factions on the horizon]. And i'll do it again if i PUG with you). I don't brake for freeloaders/jerks/n00bs (and if you read my stuff, you know the distinction I make between n00b and newb).
